Philip David Charles Collins was born in Chiswick, London, England, United Kingdom. Phil started out in the theatre as "The Artful Dodger", but had to stop when his voice broke. At an early age he got a toy drum kit from his uncle and began to learn, by the time he was a teenager he was a gifted drummer. At the young age of only 20 years old, in 1971, Phil Collins joined the English rock group Genesis. Genesis' lead singer Peter Gabriel had been looking for a new drummer and thought Phil was the perfect man for it. Phil, as well as being a drummer, was also involved in the lyrics and music for various songs including; "Supper's Ready", "Watcher of the Skies" and "The Cinema Show". It was five years later that Phil stepped into the spotlight, after the departure of Peter Gabriel to pursue a solo career, Genesis decided on Phil to be the lead singer. Genesis survived and four years later, in 1980, Phil pursued his own solo career alongside Genesis. 1981 was when "Face Value" was released and)
