William James O'Reilly, Jr. was born on September 10, 1949 to William and Angela O'Reilly. When O'Reilly was a toddler, his family moved to Westbury, New York. In 1967 O'Reilly graduated from Chaminade High School, then went to Marist College. He played as quarterback, place keeper and punter. He also played semi-professional baseball for the Brooklyn Monarchs. In 1971 O'Reilly received his Bachelor of Arts.
O'Reilly taught English and History at a Jesuit high school for two years before going to Boston where he would earn a Masters in Broadcast Journalism. He worked for ABC News for three years as a correspondent on ABC World News Tonight. While he was there, he earned two National Headliner Awards. He then went to work at Inside Edition from 1989-1995.
In 1995 O'Reilly married Maureen McPhilmy, they have two children, Madeline and Spencer.
He left Inside Edition and enrolled at John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration. After leaving Harvard, he was hired by Roger Ailes to anchor The O'Reilly Report, which would later become The O'Reilly Factor.
