Prince Rogers Nelson was born in June of 1958 in a suburb of Minneapolis.
In addition to his singing and composing skills, he is proficient at two dozen musical instruments. Prince's recording debut came in 1978 and created little fanfare until his third release,
Dirty Mind, topped the charts. It was the release of his sixth album, the double-Grammy winner
Purple Rain, that catapulted him into world-wide fame.
Purple Rain was derived from his 1984 debut film, which won an Oscar for Original Song Score. Prince went on to star and direct in his next picture,
Under the Cherry Moon (1985). Prince's last film work was
Graffiti Bridge (1990), a sequel to
Purple Rain,and received poor ratings.
His quirky and odd, alienating personality may have hindered him from achieving the recognition as being on of the most diverse and talented musicians of his day. After changing his name several times and declaring war on his Internet fan community, filing lawsuits against numerous websites,Prince returned back to his original name and has shifted focus to his Internet-only NPG Music Club, where you can pay $100 a year to get a few unreleased songs and videos per month.
