A former US Navy officer who was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for 5 and a half years. He rose to the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged upon retirement from the Navy in 1981. He entered politics as a Republican and has served as US Senator representing Arizona since 1987. In 2008, he became the Republican nominee for President of the United States but ended up losing in the general election to Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
