Laurence Fishburne is an American actor, and was born on July 30, 1961 in Augusta, Georgia. Fishburne has been working steadily on the stage and screen since the 1970's, and his career shows no signs of slowing down. His first acting jobs were on episodes of 'The Mod Squad' and 'One Life to Live.' One of Fishburne's most memorable roles occurred at the young age of 14, when he was cast by Francis Ford Coppola in 'Apocalypse Now.' The character of Tyrone Miller was supposed be 17, and Fishburne initially lied about his age to get the role. Funnily enough, the notoriously troubled production took so long that Fishburne actually was 17 by the time the film wrapped.
His film career continued steadily from then on, until 1986 brought him another of his most well known parts. Fishburne was cast in the recurring role of Cowboy Curtis on the beloved children's program 'Pee-Wee's Playhouse.' This would certainly seem to be an odd detour for the now respected actor, but Fishburne took to the role well. In the late 80's, Fishburne landed roles in films such as 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3', 'Red Heat', and Spike Lee's 'School Daze.'
The early 1990's brought Fishburne some of his all-time standout roles in films such as 'Boyz In The Hood' and the Ike/Tina Turner biopic 'What's Love Got To Do With It?.' The latter film earned Fishburne an Oscar nomination. In 1997, Fishburne starred in the cult sci-fi horror film 'Event Horizon.' The end of the decade brought Laurence his most famous role to date, in 1999 sci-fi blockbuster 'The Matrix.' Morpheus became a pop-culture icon, and is perhaps Fishburne's signature performance. He would reprise the character in the two 'Matrix' sequels.
Since then, Fishburne has lent his gravitas to films such as Mission: Impossible III', 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer', '21', 'Armored', 'Predators', 'Contagion', and 'Man of Steel'. Fishburne made his triumphant return to the small screen in 2008, starring as Dr. Raymond Langston on CBS crime procedural 'CSI.' He left the series in 2011, but can now be seen playing FBI boss Jack Crawford on NBC drama 'Hannibal.'
