Mariah Carey, also known as Mimi, was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York. Mariah's father is Black Venezuelan-American, and her mother White Irish-American. She had participated in theater workshops as a child.
Mariah's music career started in the early 90's with the release of her debut album, Mariah Carey. Mariah wrote all of the compositions on her debut album with songwriter-producers, and she co-writes nearly all of her material. The album four number-one singles, making Mariah a star in the United States. Her second album was released in 1991.
Mariah and Tommy Mottola had become romantically involved in married in June 1993. Carey and Mottola separated in 1997; Their divorce became final the following year. Soon after, Mariah released a couple more albums during and after her divorce from Tommy. Daydream was released in 1995, and Butterfly was released in 1997. During 1998, Carey had a romance with New York Yankees baseball player Derek Jeter, who is also biracial; she stated that the timing was not right for their relationship.
Just a few months later, in July 2001, it was reported that Carey had suffered a physical and emotional breakdown.
Mariah has received awards such as Best-selling female recording artist of all time by the World Music Awards show. Mariah is a philanthropist who has donated both time and millions of dollars to organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the National Adoption Center and many others.
