Billy Crudup was born on July 8, 1968 in Manhasset, New York. His parents divorced when he was still a child, then re-married each other and divorced again. He has 2 brothers, Tommy and Brooks, both of whom are producers. He moved from New York, to Texas, to Florida, and eventually graduated in 1986 from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He earned his undergraduate degree at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and later got his Master in Fine Arts from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in 1994.
Crudup made his Broadway debut the next year, and continued to work regularly on stage and in films such as Sleepers (1996) and Inventing the Abbotts (1997). One of his best known film roles was the character of Russell Hammond, the guitarist in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous (2000). His voice is also recognizable because he has been narrating the MasterCard "Priceless" television commercials since 1997. He starred in Big Fish (2003) and recently had a role in the film, The Good Shepherd (2006).
Crudup dated actress Mary-Louise Parker from 1996 to 2003, and together they had a son in 2004, though he left he while she was pregnant. He is currently dating actress Claire Danes.
