He bore such strong resemblance to actor Steve Buscemi that as a joke, John Waters sent out cards with a photo of Buscemi made up to look like Waters.

He grew his thin pencil-line mustache in honor of Little Richard. He once said that "I've had it so long, if I shaved it off, it would probably leave a scar."

He released a published anthology collection of his scripts: "Hairspray, Female Trouble, and Multiple Maniacs."

He specializes in campy home-made, seemingly amateurishly-made movies that celebrate shock, depravity, gay-culture and transvestism.

He sets all his movies in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.

For his 2000 movie "Cecil B. Demented," the title and idea came from a critic calling Waters himself that in a review. Waters thought this was so good, he had to work this into a movie.

While Waters didn't actually appear in "Pink Flamingos," the movie he wrote/directed/produced/edited and shot, he did provide the voice of the narrator, Mr. J. John Waters originally wanted a man named "Mr. Ray" to be the narrator of “Pink Flamingos.” Mr. Ray was famous for his hair-weave radio ads and for his Baltimore accent. Mr. Ray refused, so Waters recorded the voice-over himself, imitating Mr. Ray's voice as "Mr. J."
