Richard Armitage was born in Leicestershire, England on 22nd August 1971. At age 17, Richard joined a circus in Budapest, Hungary for eight weeks which gained him an Equity card. He then went on to study Drama at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) London.
Starting off with theatre work in productions such as Cats and 42nd Street in the West End in London, he followed this with small guest roles on TV in programmes such as Casualty and Doctors .
His breakthrough role came in the BBC production of North and South in 2004, where his appearance as Northern Mill owner John Thornton gained him an Army of fans. Since then he has consolidated his rising popularity with lead roles in The Golden Hour, The Impressionists and Robin Hood.
He played the the love interest for Dawn French in the final Vicar of Dibley programmes.
Richard was last seen on screen in George Gently and will shortly be appearing in Marie Lloyd Queen of the Music Hall and Marple - Ordeal by Innocence
Richard is currently filming Season 2 of Robin Hood. When not on location in Budapest, Hungary, Richard lives in London.
