Francine Joy Drescher was born on September 30, 1957 in Flushing, New York. Her parents are Morty (a computer specialist) and Sylvia Drescher, and she has an older sister named Nadine. She attended Hillcrest High School in New York, and was a classmate of
Ray Romano.
Drescher broke into the film industry with a small role in the critically acclaimed
Saturday Night Fever (1977). After this, she had a string of small but noticeable parts in movies such as
UHF (1989) and
This Is Spinal Tap (1984), which kept her in show business until she finally created her own television sitcom. This self-developed show,
The Nanny, ran for six years, partly because of her winning personality and unmistakable voice. She also starred in a second sitcom,
Living with Fran, which first aired in 2005. Lately, she’s kept busy doing guest spots on a variety of shows, including a voice on
The Simpsons.
Drescher has proven herself to be a tough lady - she has survived both uterine cancer and a rape, and has come out of both tragedies stronger than before. She wrote a book which was published in 2005, called
Cancer Schmancer.
She was married to
Peter Marc Jacobson from 1978 to 1999.
