Alfred Hitchcock was the son William Hitchcock and his wife Emma. His interest in films began when he started work as an estimator for the Henley Telegraph and Cable Company. During that time, he frequently went to the cinema and read US trade journals.

Alfred Hitchcock was a brilliant technician who deftly blended sex, suspense and humor. He began his film making career in 1919 illustrating title cards for silent films at Paramount's Famous Players-Lasky studio in London. It was there, that he learned about scripting, editing and art direction, and rose to assistant director in 1922. In 1923, he directed his first movie when the director of Always Tell Your Wife (1923) fell ill. Impressed by his work, the studio chiefs gave him his first directing assignment on Number 13 or Mrs. Peabody (1922)
