Harry Shannon began his career with travelling repertory and stock companies. His musical talent brought him to Broadway where he appeared in shows like Oh, Kay! in 1926. He later joined Joseph Schildkraut's Hollywood Theater Guild and began his film career at the start of "talkies". He did comedy shorts with comedians like Bert Lahr and Shemp Howard. During the 1940s, Shannon got character parts in feature length films playing sherrifs, dads, cowboys Irish cops and bartenders. In 1941, he played the alcoholic father in Citizen Kane. He had small roles in many other well-known films like The Jolson Story and High Noon. On television, he appeared in many westerns including Have Gun - Will Travel, Gunsmoke and Sugarfoot, but his character roles weren't limited to the genre. He also appeared on The Untouchables and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. His last movie role was the grandfather in Gypsy. His last television performance was on The Virginian.
