While attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Robert Golden Armstrong enjoyed performing on stage with the Carolina Playmakers. After graduating, he moved to New York to pursue a career in the theatre. He attended the Actors' Studio and got a role in End As a Man in 1953. Although he landed a movie role in 1954 as J. Randolph Latimore in Garden of Eden, he decided to return to New York and live theatre and in 1955, he was cast as Big Daddy in a Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

In 1958, Hollywood beckoned again and this time R.G. Armstrong was ready. In his 6 decade career, he appeared in 80 movies and landed a variety of roles on television as both a regular cast member and a guest star. In 1966, he was cast as Captain MacAllister in the television series T.H.E Cat and in 1987, took on the role of Lewis Vandredi in the Friday the 13th series. He has appeared in guest roles on a variety of shows like The Twilight Zone (1962), Perry Mason (1958.
