Barry Oringer is one of the most successful television writers. Yet he has no money, no car, no home, no insurance. His net worth, he says proudly, is zero. This is the way he wants it. He is a member of the Synanon community. Synanon — that name may ring a bell. It is noted as a place where drug users come for help. And that is its main mission. But there are some — like Oringer — who are Synanon members out of choice, not out of need. He is, he says, "a square," meaning he has never been on drugs. He prefers Synanon's life style, which is roughly like an Israeli kibbutz, to life on the outside. He has written many scripts for TV series—he did, he thinks, 18 Ben Caseys, and he has written for The Virginian, The Young Lawyers, The Interns and a few movies-of-the-week. Now he writes what he pleases, when he pleases. (A script of his, "Dancy," which involves Synanon, is on CBS' The Interns. He gets paid well for his work. When he receives a check, he endorses it over to Synanon. The community gives him a place to live, a place to work and whatever he needs. If he wants a car, he uses one of Synanon's fleet. There are others like him at Synanon. In fact, he says that both his lawyer and his accountant are Synanon members — the lawyer preceded him, the accountant followed him. He has been at Synanon about 10 years. A few years
after he joined, he fell in love with a girl there. She had been on heroin for 10 years. They are married now, and they have two daughters.
