In 1983, Vocalist Anthony Kiedis, Bassist Michael Balzary(Flea), Guitarist Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons formed a formidable piece of musical brilliance that would span over 3 decades and would still be playing to sell-out crowds to this very day.
Originally called 'Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem' they formed for what was supposed to be a one off performance. Later that year, they found themselves with a record deal with EMI. They made their name by playing live gigs but their first few albums never caught the eye of the public quite like their future albums would. 'Red Hot Chili Peppers', 'Freaky Styley', ''The Uplift Mofo Party Plan' and all did relatively poorly compared to what the band would have hoped for.
In August 1989 the band released 'Mother's Milk', the album that would launch them into stardom. It went on to sell 1.5 million copies worldwide.
But bigger things were to come when they released 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik', in September 1991. The album became the bands biggest selling album ever, shifting 12 million copies worldwide. The album is considered by many to be the finest work the band has ever created and shot the band into superstardom. In 1995 the next album in the band's collection 'One Hot Minute', was released to mixed reviews from critics and music journalists alike.
In 1998, John Frusciante rejoined the band after spending time in rehab. The result was the album 'Californication'. The album spawned 3 number one hits and many suggest that Frusciante was the reason for its major success. The next album to follow would be 2001's 'By The Way', which would create another 2 number one hits.
In 2003 a 'Greatest Hits' album was released. A year later, the band played 3 shows in Hyde Park, London. The gigs went on to be the highest grossing concert events put on by a single band in history.
In may 2006 the bands long awaited ninth studio album will be released.'Stadium Arcadium', originally including 38 tracks over 3 mini-albums, spans over 2 discs and 28 tracks, named 'Mars' and 'Jupiter'. On April 4th 2006, the first single off the album was released. 'Dani California' features the name of the girl mentioned in both 'Californication' and 'By The Way', and supposedly represents every girl front man Anthony Kiedis has ever known.
The band is famed for it's numerous line up changes but the current members have been together for 9 years now. Many believe that if the band had assumed this line up from the beginning, they may have become bigger stars than anyone could have imagined. The current line up consists of Michael Balzary, Chad Smith, John Frusciante and Anthony Kiedis. Kiedis and Balzary being the only remaining members from the original line up.
