JoJo was practically forced to be a music artist, as her father was a blues singer, and her mother sung in the Catholic church choir. At the age of four, JoJo's parents divorced; JoJo stayed with her mother in New Jersey, while her father moved to New Hampshire.
JoJo sung Aretha Franklin's "Respect" on Kids Say the Darnest Things, and did a terrific job. Because of her performance on the show, she was invited to perform on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
On America's Most Talented Kids, JoJo lost to Diana DeGarmo, but she did well, so she was contacted by Background Records' record producer, Vincent Hankerson, and produced a demo album in which she does her own versions of classic records. The album was never released, and is only available on eBay.
Later on, JoJo released her debut, self-titled album, which went on to sell 1.4 million copies, going certified platinum. The album featured smash-hits, such as "Leave (Get Out)" and "Baby, It's You" (featuring Bow Wow).
JoJo has had a few acting jobs, and starred in Aquamarine, as well as her current film, RV.
