Haydn's father, Guy, was a printer. After graduating from Nottingham University, she spent five years living in Rome teaching English as a foreign language. Then, in her mid twenties, she decided to try her hand as an actress, and in the mean time spent a few months driving round the U.S. She used to love travelling alone.
With her partner, Jason Phipps (a psychotherapist), Haydn is now the mother of two sons, Orlando (born 1997) and Harry (born in 2000). They live in London.
Haydn is becoming adaptable. As well as her work on screen, she also records audio books and plays for BBC radio, showing a talent for accents. In Peter Carey's My Life as a Fake, the accents included Australian, South African, and Tamil. In 2005, Haydn played the dance mistress in Elton John's stage musical adaptation of Billy Elliot - that included singing, and one of her songs was a funk number called Born to Boogie in which she had to turn a cart-wheel.
