Ben made his acting debut at the age of 12 when he played the role of Jesus in a pagent at the Catholic School he attended.

Ben's father passed away when he (Ben) was only 8 years old.

Before becoming an actor, Ben toiled as a master carpenter for the Welsh National Opera Company.

Ben left school at the age of 15, he worked as a window washer until getting work as a stage hand at a number of theatres.

Ben became an Associate Member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977.

Ben made his highly praised film debut as Olympic athlete Harold Abrahams in Chariots of Fire (1981).

Ben turned down $100,000 to play Prince Charles in favor of appearing for drastically smaller paycheck in a BBC mini series adaptation of A. J. Cronin's The Citadel.

In his spare time, Ben enjoys writing plays and playing piano.

Ben currently resides in Los Angeles.

In August 2004, Ben directed his son in a play.
