Former junior Senator from Illinois who had a meteoric rise from his election to the Senate in 2004 to being selected as the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 2008 to winning the Presidential election of 2008. Obama, a decided underdog at the beginning of the Democratic primaries, won the nomination over the heavily favored Senator from New York and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton. On November 4, 2008, Obama won the presidential election to become the first African American President of the United States.
