Joaquin Martinez was a medical student at Mexico City's University when a teacher nagged him into participating in the school's drama group to help him overcome his shyness. Instead, he received a scholarship to Seki Sano's Drama Studio where he was encouraged to consider acting as a career. Torn between medicine and acting, Joaquin finished medical school before taking a role in Pedro Páramo in 1967. The film was entered in the Cannes Film Festival and Hollywood noticed Joaquin.
Deciding to give acting a try before settling into a medical practice, Joaquin went to Hollywood. In 1972, he appeared in Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford and Ulzana's Raid in which he had the title role. Aside from Redford, Joaquin has worked with luminaries like Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood and Kiefer Sutherland. He was Antonio Banderas' father in The House of the Spirits and appeared with Pierce Brosnan in the Bond film Die Another Day. His television appearances are as varied as his movie roles.
Currently, he divides his time between Europe, Hollywood and Mexico developing projects with his own company, Victoria Films International.
