The Arctic Monkeys have achieved a meteoric rise to fame since the release of the first single 'I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor'. The song went straight in at number one. They followed this up with the single 'When The Sun Goes Down', also know as 'Scummy'. The is also went to number one and 'The Arctic Monkeys' became household names. Their debut album, 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not', hold the record for the largest first week sales for a debut album in the UK.
The band consists of 4 members, lead vocalist and guitarist Alex Turner, rhythm guitarist Jamie Cook, bass guitarist Nick O'Malley and drummer Matthew 'The Cat' Helders. Despite their rise to fame, the band have shunned the limelight, generally refusing to appear on television. The band have only been together since 2002 when both Cook and Turner asked for musical instruments as their Christmas presents. They made their name by releasing demos of their early songs on the Internet, available to download free.
In June 2005, the band signed to Domino Records, earlier refusing to sign to a label because they had got so far without them, why should they give in now. On 24 April 2006, the band released an EP of new material, entitled Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys. Bass player Andy Nicholson left the band officially on 20th June 2006 after pulling out of their North American tour. He was replaced by Nick O'Malley.
In early February 2007, the band announced the name of their follow up album. 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' is to be released on 23rd April 2007 with the first single to be 'Brianstorm'.
