He was the first choice to play vicious serial killer Hannibal Lector in the hit film Silence of the Lambs (1991), and was also offered the chance to direct the film.
 
At the age of 16, Gene was jailed for stealing candy & soda pop from a convenience store.
 
Brother of Richard Hackman.
 
He was the subject of the song "Gene Hackman" by Hoodoo Gurus.
