Real History
Gorillaz was formed by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett in April, 1998. They were originally identified as "Gorilla", but because of the increase of the fictional characters that composed the band, they changed the name to "Gorillaz" (the Z replaces the S). They created the characters only for fun purposes, but they never thought that they were going to become the biggest "virtual" band in the world.
They recorded a single called "Ghost Train" which was pretty successful and they got the attention of the important recording labels. They became a great hit almost inmediately; the people were surprised with the innovative style of the band.

Gorillaz Trivia |
| |
Gorillaz has the Guiness record of the most successful "virtual" band in the history. | For the shows, Gorillaz uses holograms of the fictional members of the band while the real members and guest artists play behind the holograms. | If the real artists play the music too loudly behind the holograms in their shows, these start to vibrate and don't look realistic. For this reason, they always have to play lower than the audience asks. | In their show in the 2005 Grammy awards, they used an hologram of Madonna which sang the song "Sorry" and looked like Madonna does in that video. |
