Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977 in New York, New York; to parents: Arthur and Rosellen. When Sarah was just 4 years of age, she was discovered by an agent and would soon rise to become a huge star.
At first she only got commercial ads and a few small movie roles, but her major break came in 1992 when she landed the role of Sydney Rutledge on the teen soap opera, Swans Crossing
. After the show's sudden cancellation, Sarah got cast on the long-running soap opera All My Children
, where she played the conniving character Kendall Hart, the long-lost daughter of character Erica Kane (played by Susan Lucci). In 1995, at the age of 18, she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Leading Actress in a Drama Series.
When Sarah left All My Children
in 1995, it was a while before she got cast in the lead role of Buffy Summers in the new WB TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
. This role didn't seem like much, since the show was based on the failed 1992 film of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson
and because it was on a new unknown network, The WB. The show surprised everybody as it became a massive cult classic and lasted for 7 years. It even earned her a Golden Globe nomination in 2001 for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Sarah Michelle Gellar, soon a household name, started nabbing movie offers left and right as she starred in numerous films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer
, Cruel Intentions
, The Grudge
, Scream 2
and Scooby Doo
. On September 1, 2002, Gellar and teen-movie actor Freddie Prinze Jr.
were married in Mexico.
