Tobias Moretti

Born in Innsbruck, Tyrol, Tobias Moretti was born Tobias Bloeb, but took his mother's name of Moretti for professional reasons. He is the eldest of four brothers. His brothers are named Tomas, Cristoph and Gregor. Since 1997 he has been married to Julia Wilhem, an oboist. They have two children, a daughter Antonia (born August 1998) and a son Lenz Valentino (born February 2000).

Moretti studied composition at the Vienna University of Music and Applied Arts, then went to Munich to train for the stage at the renowned Otto-Falckenberg Schule. After graduating he became a permanent member of the Bayrische Staatsschauspiel ensemble (Frank Baumbauer) and played the Munich Kammerspiele (Dieter Dorn) from 1985 to 1995 where he earned critical praise in a sweeping variety of productions, appearing in Brecht's Man is Man, Achternbusch's Der Frosch (The Frog) and playing the lead role in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida.

Moretti appeared in the TV series Kommissar Rex from 1993 to 1997 which gained him worldwide recognition. For each episode of Kommissar Rex, Moretti received approximately 50,000 mark (25,000 dollars). Despite his success, Moretti has always been cautious to remain true to himself, not letting the media, fame and fortune corrupt his character.

He plays the piano, accordion, violin, guitar, clarinet and many other instruments. In 2001, he made his debut as a director with Mozart's Don Giovanni at Bregenz.

He has his own production company.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt says about Moretti, "Moretti is a person with a great feel for music, whom you can talk to like to a musician. He is married to a musician who presumably talks primarily about music and farming with him. And if a person is so connected to nature like him, music is very close."

He has a house in Vienna, a 400-year-old alpine residence (farm) since 1997 in Innsbruck and grape farm in Tuscany, Italy. Tobias Moretti lives with his family on a farm in Innsbruck. He has a 40 hectare estate, which is a natural habitat for his 25 cows. "I don't want to live without agriculture and I can't live without acting," he says.

Tobias Moretti is no dropout and his farm is neither an idyll nor an oasis for him. This place is his home.

"Every vegetarian would envy me for the huge variety of grass on my meadow," he says jokingly.

He speaks German, English and Italian (his mother was Italian and father Austrian).

Tobias loves being on his organic farm, riding on his motorbike and Porsche, canoeing,ski-ing and cycling and climbing. He has a German sheepdog named: Pico.
