John Karlen

John Karlen lived a hand-to-mouth existence for 25 years, barely able to pay the monthly rent and the family medical bills. Then in 1982, he got hired to portray the husband in Cagney & Lacey, perhaps the most female-oriented drama series ever created."I was born and raised in south Brooklyn; my father was born in Puznine, Poland," the actor confides. He grew up in an Italian neighborhood in New York. After spending 15 years scuffling around New York stage productions, Karlen, his wife and family moved to Los Angeles in 1972. There he gained a respectable amount of TV and movie work, mostly in small roles. Karlen doesn't enjoy intellectualizing about his acting craft, preferring to play his part with almost no degree of philosophical preparation.
