A Harvard-educated city lawyer moves to San Remo, a rural practice, to lead a slower pace of life, only to find he is still kept engaged defending murder suspects. Cases were enacted in flashbacks that showed the course of events prior to the crime. Anthony Petrocelli, or Tony as he was called, was married to Maggie. They lived in a trailer while they were waiting for their new house to be built. In order to investigate the cases Petrocelli hired Pete Ritter, a local cowboy.

: "Night Games" stars Barry Newman as Tony Petrocelli, a Harvard-educated lawyer who decides to escape urban living for a law practice in a Southwestern cattle town. Susan Howard stars as his wife, Patsy, and Albert Salmi is Petrocelli's investigator, Pete Toley. Shortly after his arrival in San Remo, Petrocelli is approached by corporate attorney Clayton Nikell (William Prince) to defend socialite Pauline Hannigan (Stefanie Powers) in a controversial homicide case in which she is accused of killing her husband, Dale (Jon Cypher). Petrocelli, conservatively dressed in the Western milieu, overcomes — in his unconventional style — obstacles set by Sheriff Dutch Arnbrecht (Ralph Meeker), who resents the arrival of the big-city lawyer, and District Attorney Jaime Martinez (Henry Darrow), a
