Pinoy Dream Academy

Pinoy Dream Academy

“Pinoy Dream Academy” is a reality show seen in the Philippines on the ABS-CBN network nightly. The series is also sometimes called “PDA” and airs Monday through Thursday and Saturday at 9:30 PM, Friday at 9 PM and Sunday at 9:45 PM. This series is almost identical to the series “Star Academy” that currently airs in over 50 countries but first broadcasted in France on 20 October 2001. Spain had originally developed and produced the series but France was the first country to have it aired but 2 days later Spain debuted their version titled “Operacion Triunfo”. “PDA” also has a format a lot like “Big Brother” but instead of a house the now 20 contestants (originally 16) live in an Academy for 4 months. The contestants are called “Scholars” and are trained by teachers to be performers. Cameras record everyone’s every move 24/7 and then each night a condensed 60-minute version of what transpired the previous 24 hours is aired. The theme song for this show is titled “Awit ng Pangarap” which translated to English means “Song of the Dream”. This theme song was written by 3 scholars from the series itself who were “Kristoff Abrenica”, “Yeng Constantino” and “Yvan Lambatan”. The hosts of this series include “Bianca Gonzalez”, “Nikki Gil”, “Roxanne Barcelo”, “Sam Milby” and “Toni Gonzaga”.

The Academy is located accross the street from the ABS-CBN network studios in Quezon City, Philippines. It is a combination of the “Pinoy Big Brother” house with many other rooms added on additionally to it. Some of these additional rooms include a dance studio and a piano room and next door to the house is a concert hall where the students/scholars hold their performances. The teachers include a Headmaster, a Dance Teacher, a Fitness Trainer, a Voice Teacher, a Diction Teacher, a Belly Dance Teacher, a Performance Teacher, a Media Performance Teacher, a Songwriting Teacher, a Media Ethics Teacher and a Technical Voice Teacher. The series Monday through Friday night shows the personal lives, movements, discussions and other things of each scholar. The Satuday night shows airs their individual performance and Sunday nights they are judged. Season 1 ran for a total of 16 weeks and on 16 December 2006 they crowned their first winner on “Grand Dream Night”. The winner was “Yeng Constantino” who was born “Josephine Constantino” on 4 December 1988 in Rodriguez, Rizal, Philippines. She was named the “Grand Star Dreamer” and won a brand-new Suzuki Swift, a condominium unit at G.A.
