» For the love of Lobo

So, as Cindy had prophesied, the large order of comics I had been waiting for (for more than four weeks), finally arrived on Christmas Day. Needless to say, I was more than happy, especially since I checked in the morning and there was nothing, so it was very unexpected. Anyway, the first thing I did was read Lobo's comics. Your next question may be, who the frag is Lobo?

How can you describe him? Well, you take a dirty biker, add the blood-lust of Satan, sprinkle with a self-made code of honour, and garnish with the tenacity of a bulldog.

He is so ill-tempered that if you were to bump into him by accident, he'd more than likely kill you. Now, it was hard for Hou Qing to understand how this could be seen as cool. But there are a few things that tend to make him cool, or at least, more palatable.

1) Circumstance. Poor Lobo, always seems to have problems in accomplishing his goals. Over and over he is a victim of stupid geeks and dirty rotten fraggers who just get in his way.

2) Funny. The character himself not only has a sense of humour, but also the circumstances mentioned above, are often really funny. Like the time he was reincarnated as a squirrel.

3) Absurd violence. People have to remember that Lobo was originally (and still is in many ways) a spoof character. He is supposed to be a kind of mockery of all the over-the-top violent comics out there (and perhaps more and more that is being lost . . . always watch out, things you mock eventually become you). In general though, his violence is so absurd, it's laughable. Such as the time he cut off an old woman's legs (he was bringing her in) so that she couldn't walk away from him.

And that – in a nutshell – is what makes Lobo so cool.

When I was a kid, I used to really like Plastic Man (well I still do, but I mean it began when I was a kid), and now I see in myself a repetition of that same affection, only this time for Lobo. In many respects, the two characters aren't that dissimilar. In both cases, the number one objective is humour and enjoyment.
