» get ready 2 rokk
For a so-far undetermined amount of time I will be spotlighting artists, albums, genres, or some other aspect of music in a blog. I am doing this for various reasons, including:
  • boredom
  • the hope that some of you will recommend music to me
  • enriching your presumably sorry musical lives
  • music is awesome and I haven't blogged in ages so I might as well get going with something I know I can write about

Anyway, let's start with one of the best eras of music,

The '80s

The '80s probably had some of the best songs and artists of any of the decades in what a lot of people might call "pop" these days. Back then a lot of them were referred to as New Wave or something like that. WHATEVER. We're not here to argue genres because that's a pretty stupid thing to do.

So instead of going all history major on you I'm just going to post some of my favorite songs released in the 1980s. Probably any other music blogs I post might not be like this. I guess it depends on how much writing I feel like doing. ANYWAY.

Girl U Want - DEVO (1980)

Like most DEVO songs, this one isn't as good on its original release as it is live. It is insanely catchy and is probably one of my favorite songs of the decade.

FUN FACT: It is the band's attempt to make a song like "My Sharona" by The Knack, which I am not particularly a fan of!

Rio - Duran Duran (1982)

The video is so quintessentially '80s it's almost silly. And John Taylor plays what is probably the sickest bassline in history.

Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol (1981)

Once again the video is embedding-disabled. Anyway, this is probably my favorite song by Billy Idol, and is another song that has no business being left off any self-respecting '80s list.

Synchronicity II - The Police (1983)

I could've chosen any number of Police songs, but hey, this is the only one that has the line "humiliating kick in the crotch".

Wasted Years - Iron Maiden (1986)

Wicked guitar solo and my personal favorite song from this group. FUN FACT: Unlike most of the band's songs, which were written by Steve Harris, this one was written by guitarist Adrian Smith.

Rock Me Amadeus - Falco (1986)

Because what '80s list isn't complete with this gem?

I Want It All - Queen (1989)

Typical Brian May-written song, meaning it has some crazy guitar work, including a frantic solo in the middle.

FUN FACT: Brian May earned a degree in astrophysics in 2007. How many guitarists can say they did that? PROBABLY NOT MANY.

Anyway, I'm getting pretty tired of expanding on this list, so I do believe I'll just post this as is. Now would be the time to comment on the above in addition to telling about some of your favorite '80s songs.

It's about time someone put Wasted Years on their "Tops" list. I love that song.

Yeah I don't know why nobody ever mentions it, it's always "The Number of the Beast" this and "Run to the Hills" that.

They really should. At least they'd have something good in their otherwise miserable days.
