Show Tidbits
The show's original title was 'Life and Stuff', however, when Roseanne Barr was casted as the lead, the producer's decided to name it after her.
Writer Matt Williams is the actual show's creator, a credit that is often incorrectly given to Roseanne Barr. Roseanne, however, did base the TV character on her Domestic Goddess comedy act and had a lot of creative control over the series.
The show is set in Lanford, Illinois, a fictional town.
The part of D.J. Conner was originally played by Sal Barone in the first episode, however, after concerns with issues on the set, Barone's parents removed him from the show and he was subsequently recasted with Michael Fishman.
Natalie West originally reoccured for the first two seasons, but was upgraded to star status for the third and fourth season, despite this, Natalie West actually appears less frequently in the third and fourth season. Natalie's role of Crystal Anderson was phased out altogether after the seventh season, with only one brief appearance in the eighth.
The show sparked controversy with the network when they filmed an episode involving Roseanne's lesbian friend, Nancy's, girlfriend kissing Roseanne. This would mark the first same-sex kiss on primetime network television.
Lecy Goranson, who played Becky Conner, left after five seasons to attend Vassar College. In the sixth and seventh season, Becky was portrayed by Sarah Chalke. Lecy returned once more for the eighth season, but could not commit to the ninth, so therefore, Becky switched back to Sarah Chalke for the last year.
By the eighth season, Sara Gilbert and Lecy Goranson appear less frequently than their TV-beaus, Glenn Quinn and Johnny Galecki, despite this, Quinn and Galecki are never promoted to star status.
In the fifth season, Becky elopes with Mark Healy.
In the eighth season, Roseanne has a fourth child, Jerry Garcia Conner. Also, Darlene marries David Healy.
Jackie's marriage to Fred, who fathered her baby boy Andy, was very short-lived and ended mainly due to Michael O'Keefe's decision to leave the show behind.
