Sanford and Son based upon another series?
Yes. The series was based upon the UK series Steptoe & Son. In fact some of the scripts from the first season were used on Steptoe & Son.
How many spinoffs were there?
Sanford & Son hold the record for an African American series to have the most spinoffs. It featured three different spinoffs:
Grady (1975-1976)-Grady moves in with his daughter and her family.
Sanford Arms (1977)-Aunt Esther becomes the landlord of Sanford Arms, which is why the Sanford Arms wasn't mentioned as much after the third season.
Sanford (1980-1981)-Fred and Rollo become business partners. This was after Demond Wilson left the series.
Who was slated to play Fred Sanford?
The role was offered to Cleavon Little, who turned it down due to prior commitments. Cleavon suggested Redd Foxx to the producers for the role.
Where did the name Fred Sanford come from?
Fred Sanford was named after Redd Foxx's father.
