This story revolved around a high school freshman named, Sakuragi Hanamichi. He is a leader of a gang and loves to fight. He is not very popular among his schoolmates, especially with the girls. He has been dumped by 50 girls during his junior high. Recently, he was rejected by a girl who chose the school basketball player over him. Just when he lost all hope of finding love again, he met a girl, Akagi Haruko in his new high school, Shohoku.

Haruko, who recognizes Sakuragi's athleticism, introduces him to the Shohoku men's basketball team. Although, he was reluctant to join the team at first because he had no previous background in any sports and thought that basketball was a game for a bunch of losers. He finally decided to join the team in order to impress Haruko and to prove that he is worthy of her. And thus, begins his lessons in playing basketball and getting along with his other teammates. Despite his immaturity and hot temper, Sakuragi proves to be a natural athlete with potential.
