Hanamichi Sakuragi was dumped by Yoko, a girl he really likes in Junior High because she likes Oda, a basketball player. On the first day of school, he was approached by a girl who asked him whether he likes basketball or not. He immediately said he loves it although he has no idea how to play the sport.

2 :01x02 - Bie Basketball! Hanamichi vs. Rukawa (Oct/30/1993)
After Kaede Rukawa beat up the thugs, Sakuragi was shocked and asks him for his name. When he discovers that he is the one that Haruko has a crush on, he became very angry. Then, Haruko came and helps Rukawa with his wounds, but he acted rudely toward her and this make Sakuragi to lose his temper and head-butted Rukawa. Haruko had mistaken him for injuring Rukawa and she said that she hates him. Sakuragi is heartbroken yet again.

4 :01x04 - Basket Man Hanamichi Joins The Team (Nov/13/1993)
Hanamichi Sakuragi realized that the captain Takenori Akagi is actually Haruko's brother. He then wanted to join the basketball team to get close to Haruko, but Akagi wouldn't let him join. Sakuragi then, forced a teammate named Yasuda to teach him how to play. When Akagi saw the determination in the Sakuragi, he finally let him join.

5 :01x05 - A Fruitless Afternoon (Nov/20/1993)
Hanamichi Sakuragi has been training for two weeks under Ayako, learning all the basics. Now, he wants to play with the other, but Akagi won't let him. Out of frustration, he quits the team, but changes his mind again after seeing Haruko.

6 :01x06 - Rukawa vs. Akagi. The Real Showdown (Dec/04/1993)
Sakuragi is now doing passing exercises with Ayako. Kogure realized that he is a quick learner. But, Akagi said that Sakuragi is brainless. Mitsuyoshi Anzai, the coach of Team Shohoku finally appears to meet the team and its newest members. Sakuragi was told that Anzai was once a notorious national team coach called the "White Haired Demon", but because of his change to a nicer personality, he became known as "White Haired Buddha".

7 :01x07 - Hanamichi Debut!! Dunk Sakuretsu!! Duel (Dec/11/1993)
Sakuragi Hanamichi wants to join the game between Akagi and Rukawa, but once again, Akagi objects. After successfully getting the nods from Anzai, Sakuragi shows how much he has improved in basic skills such as dribbling. But he refused to pass the ball to Rukawa.

8 :01x08 - Hanamichi's Crisis! The Judo-man's Trap (Dec/18/1993)
Aota, Akagi's long rivalry friend wants Sakuragi to the Judo club. But Sakuragi refused. Aota then, made a deal with Sakuragi and showed him Haruko pictures; from a child, to elementary school to junior high. Meanwhile, Kogure, Akagi and Ayako were watching Sakuragi every moves from outside the window.

9 :01x09 - I'm Going To Play Basketball (Dec/25/1993)
Sakuragi finally made the decision of not joining the club. Kogure and Ayako were overjoyed that Sakuragi will stays in the club but Akagi was much more impressed by Sakuragi's words.

10 :01x10 - The Commoner's Shoot Is Difficult (Jan/08/1994)
Akagi asked the coach for permission to teach Sakuragi the basics of shooting. Sakuragi attempts to do lay-up shots but got into a fight with Rukawa instead.

11 :01x11 - Our Love's Special Secret Training (Jan/15/1994)
Sakuragi is delighted that Haruko is tutoring him on the fine art of doing a lay-up shots. After failing several times, Sakuragi finally succeeded in putting the ball in the net. At the gym, Sakuragi brags about his new accomplishment to his teammates. Sakuragi then decides to stay up late to practice the lay-up shots. He is approached by a strange boy who demands to know if he is Rukawa.

12 :01x12 - Defeat Ryonan! The Fierce Training The Night Before The Match (Jan/22/1994)
Sakuragi's mysterious visitor turns out to be Hikoichi Aida from Ryonan High. Hikoichi notices that Sakuragi is not wearing basketball shoes, but simple training shoes, and he feel sorry for Sakuragi believing that this supposedly talented player is poor. Hikoichi then tells Sakuragi about Ryonan's ace, Sendoh Akira. The next morning, Sakuragi confidently does lay-ups, drawing words of encouragement from Ayako. As practice ends, Akagi asks Sakuragi to stay behind. Unknown to Sakuragi, Akagi intends to teach him the art of rebound.

13 :01x13 - Shohoku vs Ryonan. The Secret Weapon (Jan/29/1994)
Everyone in the team is ready for their practice game. Sakuragi is eager to play too, thinking, he who controls the rebound, controls the world. He even brags that he intends to beat up Sendoh. At Ryonan High, Anzai is greeted by Ryonan coach Moichi Taoka. In the locker room, Anzai announces the starting five -- Akagi (4), Yasuda (6), Shiozaki (8), and Kogure (5) and Rukawa (10). Sakuragi angrily demands his place from Anzai and also a uniform.

14 :01x14 - Super Basketball Match With Ryonan (Feb/05/1994)
Sakuragi is still begging Anzai to let him join the game. Team Shohoku is having trouble scoring against the Ryonan with Uozumi and Sendoh playing brilliantly. At 14 mins, Ryonan has a 0-15 lead, with everyone cheering for Sendoh. With Ryonan obviously leading, the Gundan comment that Sakuragi will never get the chance to play but Haruko is confident that the team will be able to catch up since it's only the first half. The first half ends with a score of 42-50.

15 :01x15 - Secret Weapon Hanamichi Steps Into the Spotlight (Feb/12/1994)
Finally, Sakuragi has a chance to play when Akagi was hurt while playing. There is only about 9 minutes left on the clock. Sakuragi was so nervous that he started to play so stiffly.

16 :01x16 - All Out Counter Attack (Feb/19/1994)
It is 8 minutes left in the second half and the score is 68-61, with Ryonan still leading. Kogure calls out to everyone to maintain the 6 points difference until Akagi returns and Taoka tells everyone from Ryonan to continue to attack. Meanwhile, Sakuragi plays whole-heartily and Sendoh is very impressed by his tenacity. The action in the court becomes fast and furious as the game progresses.

17 :01x17 - The Rebound King Sakuragi Hanamichi's Distress (Feb/26/1994)
With 3 points ahead of Shohoku, Taoka said that the game depends on how well Sakuragi plays. Sakuragi begins to realize how important rebounds are and succeeded in getting the ball while all the Ryonan players who gather around the basket fail to. Then, Rukawa is subbed in with Akagi as Anzai Sensei wants Rukawa to rest for a while.

18 :01x18 - Last 2 Minutes! I'll Be the One To Defeat Sendoh (Mar/05/1994)
Akagi makes a successful shot, making the score 76-74. As they watch the game, Ayako encourages the freshmen to perform as well as Rukawa and Sakuragi. Sendoh marvels at how good Shohoku has become and begins to take the game seriously. With his free throw, Sendoh puts the score for Ryonan at 79-77. Seeing how poorly his team is performing, Rukawa becomes impatient and asks Anzai to let him in, replacing Shiozaki. Anzai then, calls both him and Sakuragi to approach. With 1 minute left, the score is now 83-79. Sendoh tries to score but is immediately guarded by Sakuragi and Rukawa. The game is nearing its end and Uekusa has the ball.

19 :01x19 - Time's Up! The Decisive Battle with Ryonan (Mar/12/1994)
Shohuko lost in this game although, Sakuragi did very well for his first game. Ryonan won the practice game with the score of 87-86. Sakuragi was very upset because he expected that they will win. Both Sakuragi and Rukawa vowed that they will beat Sendoh in their next game with Ryonan.

The next day, Sakuragi is having a bad mood because of the lost. He couldn't face Haruko but she comforts him instead by saying that he had done his best as a beginner. She reminds him to get a new pair of shoes and ends up accompanying him to the sports shop.

21 :01x21 - Enormous Trouble Makers Hanamichi vs Miyaga (Mar/26/1994)
Ayako overheard a conversation that Ryota has come back to school. Sakuragi bumped into her and they went to the gym together. Meanwhile, Ryota bumped into Mitsui and his gang. When Ryota saw Sakuragi and Ayako together, he mistook them to be a couple. He ignored Mitsui and started to beat up Sakuragi instead. Ayako and Haruko try to stop them. Sakuragi later found out that he is a member of the team and is nominated to be the next captain.

22 :01x22 - Enemies Who Become Friends (Apr/16/1994)
Ryota and Sakuragi were fighting for the ball like a rugby type of fighting. Ayako has no choice but to hit them with her fan. Upon Ryota's reaction, Sakuragi knew that he got a crush on Ayako. After practices, Sakuragi and Ryota walk together and ended up talking in the playground. Ryota tell Sakuragi about how the girls that rejected him. They found out that they are the same kind of people and decided to be friends.

23 :01x23 - Extremely Violent Incident! (Apr/23/1994)
Mitsui and his gang arrived at Shohoku High with the intention of destroying the basketball club. They know that the basketball team can't fight back because any fighting would mean that the club would be drop from the school.

24 :01x24 - The Battle for Justice! Sakuragi's Goon Squad Joins! (Apr/30/1994)
An angry Rukawa confronts Mitsui, but he is suddenly hit in the back of the head by Ryo with the mop. Ryota begs everyone to stop fighting. When Ayako tries to stop the fights too, she was slapped down to the floor by the same guy. Seeing that, Ryota was overcome with rage and start to rain punches on the punk who slapped Ayako. Kogure orders everyone to close the doors and yank the curtains close.

25 :01x25 - The Past Of An MVP (May/07/1994)
Mitsui was the MVP but somehow he joined Shohoku instead of stronger teams like Kainan because of his admiration for Anzai. When Mitsui joined, Akagi was just a freshman at Shohoku too. Mitsui was injured during a practice match with Akagi and couldn't play basketball until he heals up which is about 3 months.

26 :01x26 - Mitsui, The Problems Of The Past (May/14/1994)
Mitsui tried to come back forcefully, but instead made the injury even worse. When he saw how his teammates were playing later on, he felt discouraged and decided to quit basketball. Later, he got mixed up with the gangsters.

27 :01x28 - Turning Back (May/21/1994)
Everyone in the basketball club is already aware of Mitsui's past. Mitsui is too proud to admit that he still loves basketball. When Akagi arrived, he gave Mitsui 3 hard slaps. When Anzai arrived, Mitsui went down on his knees and cried. He then said what his heart has always been telling him, "I want to play basketball."

28 :01x28 - The Beginning of Interhigh Preliminaries (May/28/1994)
After Mitsui joins the basketball club again, Sakuragi's gang took the blame for the fighting in the gym. The Shohoku team then gets all warmed-up and in good shape for the Inter-High preliminary games. In the first game, Shohoku will face the tough Miuradai.

29 :01x29 - Hanamichi! Pennant Race Debut (Jun/18/1994)
The game with Miuradai starts out without Mitsui, Miyagi, Rukawa and Sakuragi. Anzai says that they were punished for their recent fight with the gangsters. As the game starts, Miuradai took the lead and the differences between their scores are far apart. Anzai finally allows the substitutes to play after they promise not to fight again.

30 :01x30 - The Introspective Army's Big Counterattack (Jun/25/1994)
After the members change, Shohoku team began to play very well. Sakuragi becomes angry for being told by everyone not to stand in their ways. The game soon ends with a tie.

31 :01x31 - Formidable Enemy Miuradai's Secret Weapon (Jul/02/1994)
Shohoku was leading after the tie. The coach decided to send out Tetsuya Naito, a freshman with incredible strength and speed. Naito had been taught well about free-throws and fouls and caused Sakuragi to make 2 more fouls. With Naito's power, his team began to score points again.

32 :01x32 - Genius Hanamichi! Certain Death Dunk (Jul/16/1994)
Rukawa discovered Naito weakness which is running in a straight line. Thus, Shohoku bounces back. With 2 minutes left on the game, Sakuragi attempted a slam dunk but it landed on Naito's head instead and it caused him to be fouled out.

Sakuragi is naturally very disappointed with himself for fouling out, but he was comforted by Akagi himself which make it easily for him to swallow.

34 :01x34 - Gorilla's Initiation, Kill with Your Eyes! (Aug/20/1994)
Sakuragi got fouled out in every game he played. Out of desperation, he went to Akagi's house to seek advice from him. The next day, Akagi gave Sakuragi an idea of how to kill with your eyes and Sakuragi took that advice literally and got fouled out again.

Sakuragi fears of getting his fifth foul so he tried to be more careful. Seeing this, Shoyo took advantage to score, but luckily Rukawa managed to block the ball. The score is tie at 60-60.

Rukawa score another point making the score 62-60 and now Shohoku has the lead. At the last few minute, Sakuragi finally had a powerful dunk that even made Hanagata and Takano to fall down. He was fouled out again.

He is confident that they would be able to defend their title once again. Meanwhile, Akagi is having a serious conversation with his team. The ultimate showdown between both teams is about to begin.

Coach Takatoh of Kainan decides to change Miyamasu for Jin as his plan is to eliminate Sakuragi from the game. When the second half began, Sakuragi got annoyed because Miyamasu was the one guarding him. Finally, Mito noticed that Sakuragi could only play well when his opponents are strong and brilliant, but when he is faced with a weaker opponent, he gets easily distraught and loses his concentration in the game.

With only 10 minutes left in the game, the score is Kainan, 73 and Shohoku 63. Anzai tells Rukawa, Akagi, Miyagi and Mitsui do a tight 4-man defense on Maki while Sakuragi guards 3-pointer Jin. The plan worked. Sakuragi managed to score 2 points when he was given 2 free throws. When the score was 74-78, Kainan coach Takatoh once again sends in Miyamasu, but this time Anzai gestures Ryota to guard him.
