A new day brings a new criminal to Gotham - Mother Appel, beneath whose pleasant exterior lurks the fiendish Simon, The Pieman. Simon, like most of Batman's enemies, is fixated. His crimes are pastry focused. With his henchmen Strudel, Cookie and others (a baker's dozen), he plans to pick the Gotham Fair clean! And in the process, he might just grind Robin, beat Batman (literally) and drown Batgirl in chocolate sauce. And with the rest of the kooky criminals in his cookie jar, Simon just might make good on his threat to corner the market on crime in Gotham!

| Simon the Pieman is the first villain created for this cartoon series. Prior to his appearance, the series relied on Batman's most well known enemies. Sometimes characters originated in other media make the jump to the comics, but this never happened with Simon (it wasn't a common occurrence at this point in comic history, when the walls between media were much higher and thicker than they are today). |

| Simon: (speaking to Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, The Riddler, The Penguin and The Joker) You're wondering about the rumor that Simon has come to Gotham to monopolize crime! Well... that rumor... is true! (Simon operates a switch on his rolling pin and rigged chairs pitch the other criminals into his cookie jar prison.) Ho ho ho! By ginger, it was a snap! | Robin: (Noticing Simon's henchwoman among the models) Wow! Look at that beautiful model!
Batman: Cool it, chum! She's out of your league! | Commissioner Gordon: (on the phone to Batman's secret identity, Bruce Wayne) The perfidious pie men have pulled off three more robberies at the fairgrounds! They stole some priceless marble busts from the Greek pavilion!
Dick Grayson: Marble cake!
Commissioner Gordon: Then they cracked the safe of the Graham Trust Company exhibit!
Bruce Wayne: Graham crackers!
Commissioner Gordon: And they robbed the cashier at the British pavilion! Got away with £20,000!
Dick Grayson: Pound cake!
Bruce Wayne: Obviously, Dick, Simon the Pieman can't resist pastry named prizes! | (Simon has trapped Robin beneath the grindstones of a flour mill.)
Simon the Pieman: When the wind comes up, Boy Wonder, the grindstone will turn... and you will be destroyed in the flower of your youth! Ha Ha! A funny joke! Simon says, laugh!
Robin: Holy hamburger! Hope the weather stays calm!! | Robin: Holy baking powder! That pie-thon has a recipe for everything! | Simon the Pieman: Now Simon has both crusaders! It was a... piece of cake! |

| The character of Simon, the Pieman is likely based on the nursery rhyme Simple Simon, although in the rhyme, Simple Simon and the pie man were two different individuals. Simon looks very much like the pie man in a 1902 illustration of the nursery rhyme, and the rhyme is associated with Mother Goose, as is Simon in the second of his appearances (see Episode References). In this appearance, Simon's robbery targets are all at the Gotham Fair; in the nursery rhyme, Simple Simon and the pie man were on the way to the fair. | Simon's catchphrase "Simon says," which he uses with annoying regularity, comes from a childhood game usually called "Simon Says." One player requests the other players perform various actions. The catch is that they must do so only if he prefaces the request with the phrase "Simon says." The caller's goal is to catch players performing actions they should not or refusing to perform actions they must, which results in ejection from the game; the last remaining individual wins the round and usually the right to call the next round. |
