Using the RahXephon, Ayato has defeated a large Dolem, which had attacked TERRA's sea fortress, the Lilia Litvyak. While everyone is very grateful for his efforts, Ayato cannot forget that if the RahXephon had not sensed his danger and rescued him, he would not have escaped the cell where he had been imprisoned by TERRA. Ayato takes his anger out on those around him, including Haruka, who is deeply hurt by his words. Due to Ayato's help against the Dolem, TERRA has decided to place him with one of their members. Ayato is taken to his new home on Nirai-Kanai where he is introduced to his new family.

Episode Notes

Japanese Title:「ニライカナイ」-「Nirai Kanai」

This marks the first time in the series that the TERRA logo is shown. The text surrounding the logo is in Latin. It says Terrano Empireo Rapidmova Reakcii Armeo or TERRA. It translates as Earth Empire Rapid Mover Reaction Arm.

Episode Goofs

Japanese Word Mispronounced:
Hilary Haag, the voice actress for Megumi Shitō, mispronounces Ramune both times. The first time, she calls it Ramee-en. The second time, she doesn't pronounce the 'e' at all and the word to sound more like Ramen (the noodles) than Ramune. The word is correctly pronounced Rahmoonay.

In the outro credits, ADV spells the episode director's name incorrectly. Ikuo Sato's given name should be Ikuro. His name will be misspelled in every episode that he directs.

Cultural References

Ayato: The Mu? Like Churchward wrote about?
Itsuki: Well, that's the source of the name, yes.

In 1933, former British Colonel James Churchward wrote The Secrets of Mu, a look into the first race of people who lived in the Pacific Ocean. The tale is simlar to that of the Atlantic Ocean's Atlantis myth, and the legend of the Okinawan's Nirai-Kanai. More information on Churchward's tome can be found here.

Nirai-Kanai
Ayato mentions that Nirai-Kanai is the Okinawan version of Utopia. The legend is of an island far out to sea where the gods of Japan have lived for generations and where all things in this world begin. It is similar to the story of the gods of Mount Olympus, the island of Atlantis, and Churchward's Mu. More information can be found here.

Ramune Soda
Ramune, the Japanese form of the word Lemonade, is a popular drink in Japan. A lemon-lime soda, it comes in many different flavours including strawberry, peach, orange, and melon.. Ramune is contained in a very unique bottle, which houses a marble that poses as the bottle's cap. A plastic stopper comes with each bottle and is used to push the marble gently down into the bottle, releasing the air in the bottle and freeing the liquid. The marble drops down to the middle of the bottle where a narrow shelf keeps the marble from falling to the bottom. Two notches just above the shelf allow for the drinker to secure the marble within the notches in order to drink the soda. If the notches are not used, the marble interferes with the user drinking the Ramune. Some bottles allow for the top cap to be screwed off and the marble removed with ease. With others, the top cap is fastened on. While the Ramune manufacturer warns against removing the marble from the latter bottles, it can be freed quite easily with a canned juice opener, a flat-head screwdriver and a hammer, or any metal tool that can be leveraged under the plastic top.

Analysis

The Nameplate
Shougo Rikudou's fashioning of a nameplate for Ayato is of special significance to the story. Soon after Ayato receives the plate, Souichi notices that the RahXephon is being "healed". In Japan, nameplates are put outside the doorway to identify those who live in the household. However, the nameplate means more than just identification. It also indicates a sense of belonging. Upon receiving the nameplate, Ayato realises that he is now a member of the family. Leaving Tōkyō left an empty spot inside him. He was a stranger in a strange land, as it were. Now, he feels a sense of belonging. Ayato's nameplate will be seen again in "Lost Songs Forgotten Melodies" alongside the nameplates for Shougo, Haruka, and Megumi.
