Episode Notes

Japanese Title: 「人間標本第1号」-「Ningen Hyōhon Dai-ichigō」-「Human Specimen #1」

On the form showing Quon's name, her name is spelled in kanji as 久遠. The actual spelling of her name is Kuon due to the fact that the Japanese language has no 'q'. However, below her name in kanji is her name spelled in Roman characters as Quon. Her family name of Kisaragi, 如月, means "Second Lunar Moon" whiler her given name of Quon means "Eternity".

Episode Goofs

Japanese Name Mispronouced I
During her talk with Sayoko Nanamori, Monica Rial, the English voice artist for Haruka Shitou, mispronounces Sayoko's given name, pausing on the 'a' and sounding the 'a' like it would be in 'bat'. The vowel sounds in 'Sayoko' are not lengthened so there should not be a pause attributed. Also, the stand alone 'a' in Japanese is always pronouced short like the 'a' in 'RahXephon'. The only time that an 'a' would sound like the 'a' in 'bat' is when an 'i' follows it.

Japanese Name Mispronounced II
While talking with Commander Kunugi, the English voice artist for Shougo Rikudou, John Swasey, mispronouces Shirou Watari's family name, lengthening the first 'a' in 'Watari' so that it comes out as Waatari. Unless the 'a' is a lengthened vowel, which in this case it isn't, there is no pause.

Cultural References

Arpeggio: Arael
The Dolem that appears in this episode, Arpeggio, takes up an orbit in space where it does not move. The Dolem's position and shape are a reference to Arael, the 15th Angel from Neon Genesis Evangelion (see first Cultural Reference to episode 22, "Don't Be.").

Elvy Hadhlyat's Gait: Spike Speigel/Lupin III
When Elvy walks away from Haruka and Sayoko, she is shown to have a bowlegged gait, much like that of Spike Speigel in Cowboy Bebop, who was modeled on the bowlegged movements of Arsene Lupin III from Lupin III.

Haruka: Operation Overlord. Wasn't that the code name for another landing operation once?
Jin: They probably hope the luck with rub off.

The name of the operation, and the English title of the first episode of RahXephon (see first Cultural Reference for "OVER LORD"), is named after the Allied forces operation which commenced on June 6, 1945, on the beaches of Normandy, France. While the fighting lasted for many weeks, eventually the operation proved to be the first step in the demise of the German army and the end of the European Theatre in World War II.

Episode References

Haruka: Um. Hey, Sayoko? About the other day.
When speaking with Sayoko, Haruka mentions the moment in "Resonance" when she saw Sayoko in the hallway just outside the viewing room where Quon is monitored as Makoto Isshiki was walking down the hall.
