"Funky Squad" Summary |

Funky Squad, an Australian series, lampooned US police shows of the 1970s in general and the series The Mod Squad (ABC, 1968-73) in particular.
As with The Mod Squad, the heroes of Funky Squad were a team of young, 'hip' undercover cops, so cool and 'with-it' that they were able to pass undetected among kids on the street. Grant was the smooth leader, Cassie the brains, Stix the action man with the Afro haircut, and Poncho was the mute (his tongue had stopped a bullet) electronics expert. They answered to the Chief, an intense, dramatic and extremely grim senior officer. Flares, tank-tops, paisley shirts, tasselled waistcoats, outrageous hairdos and all the other elements of early 1970s fashions were exploited to good comedic effect, and the camerawork and pastiche music neatly evoked the right mood and period atmosphere. |
