Dead in the Water (1) - Recap

Next Episode -->
The episode begins with the Water Police getting a mayday call about a fire on board a charter boat. Clarke tells Jeff that he is going out there with the crew. The Nemesis attend quickly, and they see someone on board the ferry covered in flames. When they pull her out of the water, she's badly injured. The ferry then explodes. Terry says the explosion could have been caused by radio, so everyone has to cease their radio transmission. Fiona tries to resuscitate the injured girl, but with no luck.

In the detectives office, Rachel looks through the dead girl's wallet - her name was Caroline Hansen. She asks Tommy if they've told the parents, he replies by shaking his head. It is then up to either Rachel or Frank to let them know. Frank flips a coin, and tells Rachel that he'll start on the interviews and she can talk to the parents.

Frank talks to the boat captain first, who says that it sounded like a bomb on the boat, not fuel going up. Rachel talks to Carly's parents; there is a photo on her wallet, she finds out that it's of Carly's biological father, who walked out when she was two.

The divers search the wreck of the boat. Dave tells Jim that the boat captain thinks that the explosion could have been a bomb.

Knocker introduces Rachel to Kevin Holloway, Frank's brother, who is starting out at Homicide. Frank walks in, wondering how Knocker's new 'side kick' is shaping up.

Back in the water, Jim continues his search of the boat wreck. He finds a bomb, and goes to the surface to tell Dave.

Rachel and Frank talk to Bellamy, the owner of the boat. They tell him it was a bomb that went off, and he is shocked. Frank asks him if he has any enemies, but Bellamy thinks that it could be random. Rachel asks him how you make enemies in the charter boat business, to which he replies "success makes enemies" but also says that his competitors wouldn't bomb his boat. Bellamy does say though, that he got a number of threats by a man, who wanted a million dollars.

Rachel and Frank talk to Helen, who then tells them to talk to Jeff - who liaises with environmental groups. Jeff gives them a list of environmental groups, but warns them not to be heavy handed.

Meanwhile the Nemesis crew are out on the water, looking for a missing jogger who was washed off some rocks. They soon find her and get her out of the water. Gavin finds a pulse but she's not breathing. He then gives her some oxygen.

Frank and Rachel talk to a woman, Ms Ritchie, who works for an organisation who is about stopping terrorism. Rachel asks her if she knows about the 'Supreme Court of the Planet Earth', suggesting that she might know someone who does. Before the detectives leave, Rachel gives her a number to contact her on.

Dave informs Terry and Jim that medical tests are being conducted the next day, so they should not drink too much alcohol. Fiona confronts Terry, who was rude to her earlier on in the day. She tells him that they are the same rank and doesn't understand his problem. He replies by saying "but I earn mine". Fiona asks Gavin what Terry's problem is; Gavin thinks that it's because she is rich. Fiona explains that it's her parents that have the money, not her.

Helen has a list of possible suspects and goes through them with everyone. Their main suspect is a man named Clifford Bowen. During the meeting, Rachel gets a phone call and steps outside. When they leave, Frank asks Rachel if she's still seeing that creep, to which she says asks which one. "The phone call" Frank answers, and Rachel tells him no.

At night, Rachel gets a phone call from a woman who wants to make an anonymous call. She tells her that she has a name, Clifford Bowen, who lives on a boat. Rachel thanks the woman for making the call, knowing that it was Ms Ritchie.

The next day, SPG are called in to help get Clifford Bowen. Inspector Michael Farrell gets Terry to place a phone on the boat, and rings it. Bowen appears from below deck and eventually answers it. Farrell tells him that his boat is surrounded by police, and Bowen panics, jumping overboard. The divers eventually get him. On board his boat, they find an unlicensed gun and arrest him. Also on board, they find Mercury Tilt Switches, which Michael Farrell says are used to detonate explosive devices.

Rachel and Frank interview Bowen, who soon wants a lawyer. While waiting for the lawyer, she and Frank eat lunch. Rachel soon remembers something and goes to make a phone call to her ex-husband, trying to explain why she wasn't at their son's school open day. Helen is in the bathroom, and overhears what is being said.

Knocker and Kevin arrive at the Water Police. They want the Nemesis crew to assist in getting someone off a ship, who is wanted for murder. The man says he is afraid of heights and doesn't want to be handcuffed while walking down the stairs. Gavin agrees, but the man jumps into the water, escaping in an onlookers boat. The Nemesis gives chase and eventually get the man, after Gavin points his gun at him.

Jim thinks that there has to be another bomb on board the boat wreck. He draws Dave and the others a diagram, and Terry searches the wreck again, finding some fragments of the bomb.

Rachel and Frank wait with Bowen for his charges to be processed, with coffee this time. Jeff calls Rachel, they found fingerprints on one of the bombs - it belongs to Bowen, who they then charge with possession of a prohibited firearm, grievous bodily harm to six people and murder of one person.

A woman enters the Water Police station looking for Gavin. Tommy recognises her, it was the jogger from earlier. Tommy tells her that he is Gavin, and he asks her if he wants to join her for dinner. Frank watches on smiling and shaking his head. Gavin appears, wanting to know where Tommy is going and Frank tells him that he thinks something just came up.
