Dead in the Water (2) - Recap

The episode begins with a man getting released from prison. He is happy to see his wife, who is waiting for him. He asks her if she has the money, to which she replies "I'm sure Frank meant well". The man is Frank's brother, Jimmy.

Frank and Rachel are about to leave work when Jeff stops them, telling them that there's been a sighting of the negligee bandit. The radio operator then tells Frank that there is someone to see him - it's Jimmy. He gives Frank the money, who has no idea about it. In the car, Frank tells Rachel about Jimmy and how he came to be in jail; Frank put him there and he went away for two years. They chat to an elderly couple whose boat has been robbed.

Jim is in the office talking to Clarke. He has the results of the medical and it's been found that he has a heart condition. Jim says that he is fit to dive. Clarke tells him to take some sick leave while they do some more tests.

Frank and Kevin talk. Frank gives him the money Jimmy gave him. It was Kevin who sent Jimmy the money while their brother was in prison. Meanwhile Rachel goes to her son David's school to see him. Her ex-husband Jonathon arrives and he and Rachel talk. He is not happy about a rumour he has heard about Rachel and Frank. Rachel defends what had been said, saying that she and Frank are work partners and that's it.

At the station, Jim tells Terry that he has to take sick leave. Terry is surprised, saying that Jim is the best diver that they have. Jim says "now you are". When he leaves, Terry talks to Dave, annoyed at what is happening.

Rachel tells Frank about the rumour Jonathon told her. As a joke, Frank suggests that since they are copping the blame, they may as well get stuck into it. Rachel goes along with the joke, saying "your desk or mine?" She finishes by saying that she knows who started the rumour. Frank then says that he thinks he knows the negligee bandits motive - she seems to like big boats, so Frank has an idea.

Later that night, Frank and Rachel stake out the elderly couple's boat. Frank is inside the boat, while Rachel stays outside, on board a small runabout. They talk over the radio for a while, before Rachel sees the negligee bandit approaching, and she enters the boat Frank is on. The woman sees Frank and tries to seduce him. Rachel comes on board and sees the two in an awkward position, saying, "I believe the words you are looking for Holloway are, police you're under arrest."


The next day, Frank talks to the woman before Rachel comes in. Gavin, Tommy and another officer are looking in through the door. Rachel gets up and slams the door in their faces, asking Frank if he'd told them about it. Frank says no, and Rachel replies "bloody boys club". The woman eventually gives them the name of someone who has been selling some of the things she stole.

Rachel is sitting in her car, parked in a street, looking at a road map. A couple and their children walk by, and Rachel gets up, wondering if she could get some directions. The man says he'll help, while his wife goes to their house. He asks Rachel what she's doing, he's with his family. Rachel tells him that she has a family too, and the rumours he's spreading about her and Frank aren't appreciated. "You're making my life difficult, you keep it up, I'm gonna make your life difficult". The man walks away, and under her breath, Rachel says "sucker."

Helen gets everyone into the meal room, pairing people up to board ferries as there have been some robberies. On board a ferry that Tommy and Fiona are on, a man has a gun pointed at the ferry captain. He confronts Tommy and Fiona, and then makes them jump off the ferry. Once back on the Nemesis, Tommy gets on the radio and tells them about the man with the gun.

The man with the gun claims he has planted a bomb on the ferry, the same one as the charter boat bomb (see episode 1x01). The man wants Clifford Bowen brought to the ferry, or else everyone dies. Knocker arrives to begin negotiating with the man, who eventually says that his name is Bridges.

Rachel and Frank talk to Clifford Bowen, wondering if he had an accomplice. They begin to doubt that Bowen had someone he worked with, so Frank lets Knocker know. Frank and Rachel go out to the ferry to let some of the passengers off, after the man agrees to let the women and children go.


Dave and the other divers go back to the wreck of the ferry, finding a boat near where the wreck is located. They find a bag, it belongs to Jim. Terry goes down to the wreck, finding Jim with the other bomb. They try to revive him, but he's dead. The finding of the last bomb means that the man on board the ferry is lying about having a bomb.

While trying to get everyone off the ferry, the man takes them by surprise, telling Frank to get on board. Rachel recognises the man, she saw his photo in Carly's wallet (she died on board the charter boat bombing) - the man is her biological father. Rachel jumps on board the ferry as it is leaving. She tells the man that there is no more bombs, that the divers found the last one. The man still wants Bowen, even after Rachel tells him that she knows why he wants him. When the man is caught off guard, Frank grabs the gun and passes it to Rachel, who gets rid of the bullets. The man cries and Frank consoles him.

Clarke tells Dave and Terry that Jim was trying to eliminate the hijackers threat by finding the last bomb.

The man, Conran, tells Frank and Rachel about his daughter Carly - or Caroline as he called her. He tells them why he tried to do what he did, thinking that Bowen would get a slap on the wrist, and that he only wanted justice for his child.


Frank and Rachel leave the station. Frank thanks her for putting herself on the line for him, and goes on to say that maybe he wouldn't have done it for her. But Rachel thinks that he might have, and leaves. Frank looks up at the full moon and winks.
