Season 1

Season one of Water Rats premiered on Channel Nine in Australia on the 12th of February 1996 in a two-part episode. All major characters were introduced during the two hour premiere.

It was clear early on that Detectives Frank Holloway (Colin Friels) and Rachel Goldstein (Catherine McClements) had not been working together for very long, though a conversation between the two a quarter of the way through the season seemed to make their working relationship click.

Rachel met Frank's younger brother Kevin (Jeremy Callaghan) in the first episode, this was later followed by the pair having a one-night-stand, something which Frank wasn't too happy about. After Kevin was murdered, Rachel started a relationship with fellow detective John Harrison (Peter Mochrie) - who was revealed to be corrupt later on in the season.

Fiona (Sophie Heathcote) and Terry (Aaron Jeffrey) also began a relationship but it didn't last long as Fiona was given an opportunity to further her career by Jeff (Peter Bensley), and she chose the career option over Terry.

It is revealed that Helen (Toni Scanlan) is gay, however the only character who didn't seem to know this was Rachel.

Later in the season, the Water Police Chief Inspector Clarke Webb (Bill Young) resigned over personal issues which would have seen him investigated by the top brass. This lead to Jeff eventually getting the job of Chief Inspector (after he appealed the initial decision to appoint someone else for the position).

Water Rats was created by Tony Morphett and John Hugginson, and in the first season, starred: Colin Friels, Catherine McClements, Jay Laga'aia, Brett Partridge, Peter Bensley, Scott Burgress, Sophie Heathcote, Aaron Jeffrey, Toni Scanlan and Bill Young (until episode 19).
