A mission into outer space ends with the commander going mad. Bizarre disappearances and accidents strike throughout San Francisco. Could there be a link? Archaeologist Lloyd Walker and entomologist Marianne Winters suspect there is … and their investigations lead them to a horror neither could imagine.
An underground colony of mutant insects are feeding off humans for survival, and Elizabeth Quinlan, an employee at the mayoral office, is the creatures' Earth queen.
With the police and local government overrun with evil insects masquerading as humans, it's not looking good for Lloyd and Marianne if they're going to prevent the demise of the human race. The only one who can help is the unhinged space commander, but can the pair find him?
