Peter is working at night with Gwen and Eddie at Dr. Connors' lab, experimenting with genetically modified eels to produce a self-renewing energy source. Technician Max Dillon is working on the electric filters when Martha Connors comes in with their son to have Curt wish him goodnight. She also tells Peter and Gwen to head home, and Aunt May calls on Peter's cell phone to make sure he's going to be in by curfew or she knows where he is. After they leave, Dillon knocks a power tool into the electric filters and the shock throws him back into the eels. Curt and Brock get him to the hospital where he is put into quarantine because he is giving off huge amounts of electricity.
The next day, Peter manages to get across town to school as Spider-Man, but once he arrives he discovers that Jameson has stole his idea and is paying for Spider-Man photos. After avoiding one of Flash Thompson's pranks, Peter finds out he's been assigned to help tutor popular girl Liz Allen. Neither one of them is thrilled at the idea.
At the hospital, Dillon is stabilized but the doctors are forced to put him in a containment suit to control the electricity he's omitting. Dr. Connors promises to find a cure while Brock sits at the angry Dillon's bedside. Finally Dillon loses his temper and walks out of the hospital.
Peter is trying to tutor Liz at a café without much luck. Dillon comes to the place to get coffee but can't drink it through the containment suit. He gives off a burst of electricity but then apologizes to the patrons and runs out past Peter. Peter loses Liz and dons his Spider-Man costume to go off in pursuit as well as get some photos to sell to Jameson. He ends up pulling off Dillon's containment headpiece, and gets knocked back by the unleashed electricity. Spider-Man tries to avoid his lightning bolts and also has to deal with Aunt May, who is calling on the cell phone to insist he come home as soon as possible. Distracted, Spider-Man lets Dillon escape.
A disappointed Peter discovers that none of his photos turned out. Once he figures out that Dillon was responsible, he prepares to leave but first apologizes to Liz for abandoning her the previous night. He sets up a tutoring session for her at Connors' lab that night. She shows up while Peter and the others are trying to figure out how to cure Dillon, and Peter manages to get her interested in science. Meanwhile, Bromwell and the police go to Dillon's apartment but he refuses to let them help him and goes after Connors, who he holds responsible.
At the lab, Martha finds her husband injecting modified lizard DNA into himself in an attempt to regrow his missing arm. She's not happy but they're interrupted when Dillon bursts into the lab and demands they help him. Brock goes after him while Peter getes the girls out the back then ducks away, dons his Spider-Man costume, and goes back inside. Dillon easily disposes of Brock and Spider-Man goes after the villain, who announces that he is now "Electro." One lightning blast hits Connors' lizard DNA sample before Spider-Man can try to contain him. It doesn't work and Electro blasts out of the lab. Another photographer tries to get pictures of Spider-Man, who is forced to get him out of the way. Spider-Man then goes up a metal tower where Electro tries to corner him. Spider-Man is also forced to deal with Aunt May, who has called again to accuse him of abusing his call-in privileges to get around his curfew. Spider-Man finally has to hang up and then knocks Electro into the college swimming pool, shorting him out.
The next day Liz walks up to Peter and thanks him for helping, and even admits he isn't totally useless. However, when Flash and his gang show up, she quickly reverts to type to keep her friends. A disappointed Peter just walks away, while saying that the trick is never to stop trying no matter what happens. Meanwhile, the Connors are cleaning up the lab and Curt picks up the lizard DNA serum, unaware of how it's been altered.
