Catalysts - Recap

Spider-Man is thrown through the window of a skyscraper but quickly catches himself and lands in the middle of a black-tie party. Following him in is a new villain: the Green Goblin.

Earlier Tonight

Harry arrives at the Fall Formal with Gloria and it’s clear he’s made an impression with Flash and his buddies, thanks to his money. He ignores Gwen, but is astonished along with the rest when Peter arrives with Mary Jane Watson on his arm. Gwen is less then thrilled.

At the Bugle, Jameson is still recovering from the Rhino’s attack and preparing for a party that night. Jameson’s son, an Air Force colonel, arrives to join him for a night out.

Peter introduces Mary Jane to the “in crowd” and Flash announces Peter won the bet. Mary Jane doesn’t flinch at the news and dances with Peter. While Harry gets drinks, Kenny pleads for one more chance with Gloria and she grants gives in. An angry Harry runs to his locker and drinks a formula he’s stolen from his father’s company.

At the lab, Dr. Otto Octavius is working when he sees a thief steal a high-tech experimental glider: a thief who looks like a green-skinned goblin. He then attacks robbers working for Hammerhead and the Big Man and helps them open the safe, and says he plans to take down the Big Man and he is the Green Goblin.

At the party, L.Thomas Lincoln (Tombstone) is hosting a charity affair that Jameson and John are attending. John says he’d rather go for a steak and he prepares to leave with his father, but the robbers working for the Green Goblin break in and take everyone prisoner. The Goblin tells Lincoln to step down or he’ll reveal his secret, but Lincoln refuses and tells his men to get the intruder. The Green Goblin easily deals with them and disarms John Jameson when he tries to grab a gun. Jameson calls Robertson at the Bugle and tell his editor to get Peter there to take photos.

Peter gets the call at the Formal while Mary Jane talks to Gloria. Peter begs off saying he has to get some photos and Mary Jane takes it well and tells him to get back. He gets to the party and Lincoln is pleased to see him show up so he can dispose of the Goblin. The Goblin suggests they join forces but Spider-Man isn’t impressed and starts the fight.

The Present

While Spider-Man and Green Goblin fight, the King and Queen of the prom are announced, and Flash wins as King. However, Mary Jane wins as Queen, upsetting the other girls but amusing Gwen.

Spider-Man manages to grab Goblin who flies outside then drops him, and Spider-Man plummets toward the ground. He manages to load a new clip of web fluid and save himself, but the Green Goblin pursues him through the city streets. Spider-Man manages to throw one of his own bombs back at him and eventually ensnare him in a web. However, the Green Goblin says he left a timed explosive at the party and Spider-Man goes to clear the room, intimidating the Goblin’s thugs into running. John Jameson helps get everyone to safety while Spider-Man and Tombstone join forces to find the bomb. However, John realizes the bomb is in the chandelier and lets them know, and Spider-Man makes a web catapult to shoot the bomb up above the city where it detonates harmlessly. Tombstone applauds his actions and notes he offered Spider-Man a salary to do what he did anyway for free. Spider-Man is not amused.

John convinces Jameson not to publicize his part in the story as it could get him canned from his current mission. Jameson is furious that Peter never showed up to take the photos, until Robertson tells him that Peter already e-mailed in the photos.

Harry has disappeared at the formal, so Thompson and his crowd aren’t happy. They’re unaware that Harry is in the alleyway, drinking the last of his stolen formula. Peter gets to the Formal just in time to share one last dance with Mary Jane.
