In 1945, the U.S. Navy unleashed the "Typhoon of Steel " on the Japanese island of Okinawa, the largest naval armada ever used by the U.S.. Instead of the quick victory in which was supposed to happen, it started the bloodiest battle ever seen in the Pacific, which lasted over 3 months and saw thousands more killed on both sides than in both post-atomic Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. But the battle didn't just happen above ground, it was fought underneath it too in a beehive of tunnels in which the American troops faced down the entrenched Japanese army, to the caves in which thousands of civilians fled to hide and hundreds ended up perishing. This episode shows Don Wildman what it was like to live through the Battle of Okinawa. He heads underground to the subterranean tunnels, caves, and bunkers, where few have gone, and dives to explore the lost naval destroyer sunken deep in the waters off Okinawa's coast. | | There are no foreign summaries for this episode: Contribute |
