Toma

Toma

Police drama based on the real life adventures of unorthodox New Jersey police detective David Toma. Tony Musante starred in the title role as Toma with Susan Strasberg and Simon Oakland co-starring as his wife and police superior. The series was canceled after one season because Musante had only signed on for one and refused to re-sign. ABC wanted to bring back the show so they signed Robert Blake to star as the second Toma. Blake balked at playing a character created by another actor so the name of this second incarnation of Toma was changed to Baretta.

Recaps
1x1: The Oberon Contract recap: In tonight's effort. Toma, briskly portrayed by Tony Musante, appears in no less than five disguises while trying to clear Eddie Siatti, an ex junkie friend (Martin Sheen), of a murder frame-up.
The deceased is a silver-haired city councilman who is shot dead in the opening scene by a swarthy man in a dark suit. It turns out the councilman is on the take from the mob, even though he's a former cop. His heart stoppage stems from an impending sub-poena ordering him to testify before a local crime commission. It also turns out the police find the murder gun, which belongs to the ex-junkie. He promptly barges into Toma's home, seeking sanctuary and frightening Toma's wife (Susan Strasberg) no end.
The ex-junkie gets shook up a bit himself when Toma comes home and learns of the barging. When Toma cools off, he persuades the kid to surrender while he personally checks out the case. The checkout soon puts him on the trail of the killer, who has been hired by Jake Ricci, a sinister mob boss, who speaks softly, wears expensive threads and has a young grandson he dotes on. When the gunsel warns the boss that Toma is hot on the trail, the old man pulls him aside and snarls: "Not in front of the kid. Never in front of the kid."
Toma solves the case amid suitable gunfire and running villains... read more.
