Francis Urquhart, Chief Whip of the Tory Party, is a modern day Machiavelli who manipulates things and people to achieve his ambition of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, all the while keeping his hand carefully hidden behind the scenes. But Mattie Storin, a young reporter, may be getting too close to uncovering his machinations. The series and its sequels, To Play the King and Final Cut, aired in the United States as installments of Masterpiece Theatre.
