Chance Miller is shaving at home in his bathroom and looks up into the mirror to discover that his reflection has disappeared and his hands are covered in blood...
... and wakes up from his nightmare. His girlfriend Jackie asks if everything is all right and Chance says that he’s fine. He goes to the bathroom and looks at his reflection in the same mirror from his nightmare. When he goes to the kitchen, Jackie warns him that they’re three months behind on the rent and their landlord wants the money. Chance assures her that he’ll have it the next day and says that he has a deal set up with a bookie, Ronnie. He insists that it’s different this time but Jackie isn’t reassured and asks what happened to the sales job. She doesn’t want a sure thing, she wants him, and leaves for her job.
Chance goes to his bedroom and opens up a package containing a vase. He puts it back in and takes the package to Markham Antiquities, only to discover that it’s closed. Desperate, Chance calls the owner, Walter, and reminds him that they met at a party and Walter told him to come to the shop at 5. Walter says that he’s closing early and wants to talk after the holidays, but Chance tells him that he has the vase they talked about from Ray Hoffman. The owner buzzes Chance in and brings him to the back office. Chance notices an antique mirror and studies his reflection, and Walter says that the glass is worthless but the wooden frame is valuable. While Walter examines the vase, Chance notices that his reflection in the antique mirror is shifting and changing, but then reverts to normal.
Walter offers Chance $5,000, explaining that it’s from a later period than the one he believed when he offered Chance more money at the party. Chance tries to bargain, noting that Walter promised him more money if he could get the vase without Hoffman, the vase owner, finding out that Walter was interested in it. Walter offers to call Hoffman and take care of things, but Chance calls him and discovers that the Hoffman’s number is disconnected. Chance persists, explaining that the vase is the one that Hoffman bought, but Walter says it’s not the vase he needs and tells Chance to come back on Tuesday and get the $5,000, because he’s going on vacation with his wife. When Chance says that he needs the $45,000 Walter promised him, the dealer says it was a conversation, not a deal. Walter realizes that Chance put everything he had into getting the vase, $20,000, and Chance says that he did what Walter told him to do.
When Walter says that he only saw the vase from a distance and couldn’t positively confirm it was from the earlier period, Chance angrily accuses Walter of working with Hoffman to con him out of the $20,000. He tells Walter that he knows from the people who invited him to the party that the dealer has the money in his office. Walter pays him the $5,000 in cash and tells Chance to go home and grow up. As Chance starts to leave, Walter tells him to take the vase with him. Chance attacks Walter and chokes him, and the dealer grabs the vase and smashes it over Chase’s head. As Walter tries to run, he trips over the antique mirror and hits his head on a table.
Chance thinks that the dealer is dead and starts to leave, but hears something moving in the main room. He grabs a cane and investigates, and finds... himself. Chance-2 calls him pathetic and walks away. Chance goes back to the office and discovers that Walter is still alive and crawling to his phone. The dealer puts his hand down on the discarded glass and sees Chance’s reflection as he raises the cane and proceeds to beat him to death.
Chance-2 come into the room and asks if Chance plans to kill him. Chance insists that it was an accident but his doppelganger points out that it doesn’t look like an accident. He congratulates Chance on giving Walter what he deserves and asks if he wants some help. When Chance refuses, Chance-2 walks out. Chance looks down at his hand and discovers that he’s holding a silver cigarette case.
Chance goes to Walter’s bathroom and tends to the cut on his forehead. He reaches for the money sticking out of Walter’s pocket and then recoils as a smoke alarm goes off. Chance panics and crawls up on an antique chair to turn it off, but is unable to reach it. He knocks it down with the cane and finally smashes it, and then puts out Walter’s cigarette, which set off the alarm, and the phone ring. Chance finally answers the phone and Walter’s private security company asks about the alarm. The man asks for the security password and Chance tries to bluff it out without success. When the security man hangs up, Chance realizes that he has to get out.
Chance tries to clean up as best he can and then heads out, only to see a security guard outside, looking into the window. The guard, Geaghan, knocks on the door, gets no answer, and starts to call in to his office. Chance has no choice but to answer the door. He claims he lit a cigarette and that no one else is inside, and that Walter left for the holiday without giving him the password. Geaghan insists on coming in and Chance agrees, and Geaghan asks him to show him the detector. Chance takes him to the back office and sees his doppelganger lurking in the shadows. In the office, Chance explains that he threw away the smoke detector because it wasn’t working, and offers him a good deal if he comes back after the holiday. However, Geaghan spots Walter’s corpse and Chance runs him through with a sword.
As he steps back in shock, Chance hears his doppelganger going up the stairs to Walter’s apartment. Chance-2 is pouring two drinks and notes that Chance was particularly brutal. When Chance goes to call Jackie, Chance-2 points out that his counterpart left fingerprints all over the place. He reminds Chance that Walter said he was leaving with his wife, meaning she’ll be there any minute.
Chance shoves Geaghan’s body out of sight but Chance-2 notes that eventually the wife is going to note the smell. He also reminds his counterpart that he called Walter on his cell phone, meaning the police can trace the call. The two Chances haul the bodies out to the dumpster and start cleaning up the blood. As they work, Chance-2 explains that Walter and Hoffman were running a con, and then finds two of Walter’s severed fingers.
As Chance picks them up, his cell phone rings. He pockets the fingers and takes the call. It’s Jackie, who wonders why Chance is running late. He lies and says that he got the money, and Jackie suggests they go away to celebrate. As Chance hangs up, Chance-2 wonders what he plans to tell her now. Chance figures he’ll make up something, but is interrupted when Walter’s wife enters the shop. She comes in the back, doesn’t notice Chance who is hiding, and goes upstairs. Chance-2 tells Chance that he needs time to find the money and escape, and he needs to kill Walter’s wife. Chance balks, saying it was all a mistake, but Chance-2 says that he has no choice and that he’s out of options. When Chance tells Jackie that he screwed up again, she’ll leave him. Chance-2 says that he’s the only one who really cares about him and he needs to find the money and get his life back on track. When Chance insists that he’s not like his doppelganger, Chance-2 says that’s the problem.
After finding a single glass of alcohol on the counter, Walter’s wife takes a shower. Chance-2 goes upstairs and prepares to kill her, but Chance comes up and says that they won’t kill her. When Chance-2 ignores him, Chance runs downstairs. Meanwhile, the wife finishes her shower and goes to the mirror. Chance-2 comes in behind her and she sees him in the mirror. He rams her into the mirror and strangles her, while on the street below, Chance hears her screams and runs.
Chance goes back to his apartment and calls to Jackie. He finds a message from her saying that she went to the store and will be back in 30 minutes. Chance pours himself a drink and remembers what he told Jackie earlier as he washes up. Jackie finally comes home and she tells Chance that she has a surprise. Chance looks in the mirror and realizes that the cut on his forehead has disappeared. Walter’s $45,000 is in his jacket and Chance starts to remember successfully selling the price for the original price and leaving Walter alive.
Jackie comes in with champagne but stares in horror as she sees Chance, the cut on his forehead and Walter’s severed fingers in his hand. He remembers what really happened and how he killed three people. Chance-2 smashes in the door, grabs Jackie, and then closes the bedroom door while Chance hears his girlfriend’s screams and begs his doppelganger to stop.
The police arrive a few minutes later and find Jackie’s corpse on the floor. One officer enters the bedroom and sees Walter’s severed fingers on the floor. He spots Chance cowering behind the bed and tells him to surrender. Chance laughs and raises his blood-covered hands. The officers put him in the squad car while the neighbors talk about how he looked like such a nice guy but turned out to be a monster. Meanwhile, Chance looks in the rear-view mirror and smiles.
