New Year's Day - Recap
January 1st, New Year's Day
Helen wakes up in her apartment, with a bottle of booze and a container of pills on the nightstand next to her. Sirens are going off in the distance and she vaguely remembers going to a party the previous night. After vomiting in the bathroom, she hears screams outside and goes to the window to find the city under martial law. Military officers on loudspeakers are telling everyone to stay inside.
Helen goes to her roommate Eddie's room and knocks on the doo rbut doesn't get an answer. She goes to her neighbor Mrs. Pribble's apartment and finds a radio broadcasting government warnings for people to avoid the "blast zone" and avoid touching anyone infected. Helen finds blood all over the place but no sign of Mrs. Pribble. Helen goes back to the apartment and breaks down the door to Eddie's room, and finds the sheets covered with blood. She tries to call her boyfriend James but ends up with his voice mail. Something slams into the door and Helen looks through the peephole to see a dead and disfigured Mrs. Pribble ramming her head into the door.
New Year's Eve
Helen is at home in casual clothing, talking to Kevin the neighbor boy. She's studying photos of her father, who recently died. Eddie comes in and asks if she's going to the party, noting she isn't dressed. Kevin leaves and Eddie tries to cheer her up, noting that James will be at the party. Eddie talks about knowing how James is feeling toward Helen. She cheers up enough to dress and go to the party.
January 1st, New Year's Day
Helen's friend Christie calls but the signal is bad and Helen can barely make out that Christie is at James' place. Christie is watching the news, where everyone is talking about an explosion. Helen goes to the door and, after making sure Pribble has left, goes outside. She sees Pribble down the hallway but the zombie ignores her. However, a fatally wounded Eddie slams into Helen from behind and falls to the floor. Helen tries to move him without success and goes to the elevator. As she gets in, Eddie, now a zombie, appears in the doorway. The doors close just in time and the elevator starts to go down. Helen hears a girl's voice calling from above. The girl falls through the hatch, covered in wounds. The girl dies in Helen's arms as the elevator descends to the parking garage.
Helen goes to her car and the alarms of the other cars go off as a figure moves through the shadows. Helen gets to her car and the figure emerges: a man with a gun, who demands her car. He knocks Helen to the ground and she sees the dead girl, now a zombie, crawling toward the man. As the man attacks Helen again, the zombie attacks him and starts biting his leg.
New Year's Eve
Helen and Eddie arrive at the party and talk to Christie. Eddie explains they're late because there was an explosion at a chemical plant and the police had the road blocked. Helen and Christie talk about their friendship, with Christie saying that she's sorry she hasn't been there for Helen. Helen admits that she thinks Christie is her only friend and that no one likes her for herself.
New Year's Day
Helen gets to her car while the zombie kills the gunman. Helen tries to get out but her car stalls. Eddie arrives on the driver's side while the zombie gunman approaches from the rear. Helen gets out of the passenger's side and runs up the stairs. She gets a call from James who tries to warn her to keep off the streets and stay where she is, but the signal breaks up before Helen can understand the message. Helen gets in her car while the zombie girl kills the gunman. She drives off, hitting both of them, but her car stalls. The gunman, now a zombie, comes after her and Eddie approaches as well. Helen gets out and runs for the stairwell. James calls her and tries to warn her to stay off the streets and stay where she is, but the signal is still bad.
New Year's Eve
Helen locates James and he apologizes, saying he was late and couldn't call. She wonders at this but he claims that he's not trying to avoid her. They kiss and get a drink, and she asks about what James told Eddie about his feelings. Helen blurts out that she loevs James, but before James can respond an explosion shakes the building. James goes to see what happened.
New Year's Day
Helen spots an elderly couple and follows them into a building. She finds the old woman dying in her husband's arms. The husband draws a gun and screams at Helen, saying that she's responsible for what happened to his wife. He comes after her and Helen runs into the basement, locking the door behind her. She tries to get out but the other exit is boarded up. The husband's cries stop and and Helen goes back to the door and sees blood oozing beneath the door jam. She opens the door and follows the trail of blood to Eddie, who is eating the dead husband.
New Year's Eve
The clock strikes midnight and Helen finds Eddie as she looks for James. They go over to the bar where the newscaster is talking about witnesses reporting strange disfigured people at the site of the explosion. Eddie tells Helen to forget about James and that he lied earlier to spare her feelings. James doesn't really love her... and Eddie kisses her, saying he likes how she's different from all the other girls.
New Year's Day
Eddie chases Helen into the streets, where she runs into a zombie police officer. He ignores her and attacks a group of teenagers. She walks through the streets, seeing zombies eating corpses everywhere she turns. She gets to James' apartment and pounds on the door.
New Year's Eve
Helen runs away from Eddie and finds James... kissing Christie.
New Year's Day
Helen manages to get the apartment door open and goes inside to find Christie. Christie is cowering away and tells Helen to stay away. Helen asks where James is. He comes into the room... and shoots her twice.
New Year's Eve
Helen leaves the party despite Eddie's attempts to stop her. She goes back to her compartment, takes some pills, and starts drinking heavily. Eddie comes home after her and goes into Helen's room. He tries to wake her up and discovers that she's dead. He goes to his room to get his cell phone and call the EMTs, but Kevin comes in. The boy is a zombie and attacks Eddie.
Now
James tells Christie that Helen is a zombie and that she's been a zombie all night. Helen goes after Christie and James shoots her again. Before he can dispose of her for good, Eddie breaks in and grabs James, drags him to the floor, and rips him apart. He then goes to Helen and takes her hand, and she takes his. The two of them hold hands for a moment... and then attack Christie.
