!!!!!! This review contains spoilers !!!!!!
My Own Worst Enemy what a title. After all the hype around this show, I had to tune in to see if really delivered the goods. They made a big deal because Slater hasn't done TV work in a while so this was going to be interesting. BTW you can watch this on Amazon.com prior to the official premiere.
The pilot starts with Edward Albright in Paris, France getting it on with a beautiful young lady. They exchange in conversation and Edward demands where Uzi is (Uzi is some dangerous German boss). The women pretends to take a shower or whatever. Edward is a veteran spy. He sees through her deception (as she cocks her gun ready to kill him), Ed nails her as she shoots the bed (which has a pillow to fool her). Upon reporting his findings on his mission, Ed becomes Henry Spivey his alter-ego (shown in nifty special effects as Edward falls asleep and Henry takes over). Henry is everything Edward isn't. He has an actual family to begin with and he isn't a spy. There is the premise right there Edward has participated in an experiment given him the ability to become two personalities.
Apparently, the experiment (implant in Edward's brain) isn't quite successful as Henry often remembers bits and clues of what Edward did. This doesn't seem like a big deal until it interferes again with Uzi mission as Ed goes back to Henry. It seems that the experiments are not bullet proof. However, we see the calvary comes to Ed/Henry's rescue (obviously they anticipated such a disaster happening) when Edward blows his own cover. When Henry realizes who rescued him (one of his own friends), he is taken back. The friend also turns out to be not what Henry thinks he is. He is also working for the government. Henry tries to get answers but the answers he gets only make him even more depressed. I won't reveal too much except that it's a nice little twist.
How the rest of the episode I won't say except to reveal that it is very entertaining. I will also say that Christian Slater provides great acting here. You can tell when an actor is really into his role and that makes all the difference in the world. I will mention the rest of the cast which is great. There is Alfre Woodward who plays Edward's boss, Mavis Heller. She is also great and let's Henry/Edward know that he can be eliminated at any time. Bella Thorne as Henry's wife, Ruthy Spivey, isn't in a whole in the pilot but she is a capable actress. Omid Atayi as Tony (the technology dude keeping track of the experiment) is also good. Saffron Burrows as Henry's psychologist is great (not too mention beautiful). I really hope NBC gives this show a chance. From what I saw of the of the pilot, this should be a great series. I would recommend it to anybody whose into spy shows and movies to watch it.
